**Note: This is a special topics ENC 1102: Writing About Diversity in Children's Literature. #WeNeedDiverseBooks was created earlier this year as a response to the overwhelming lack of diversity in children’s literature. From picture books to young adult novels, the deficiency is alarming. In this class, we’ll start with the question: why does diversity matter, or more importantly, why is it important for children to see themselves represented—and represented without stereotypes—in the literature they read? We’ll also explore what novelist Chimamanda Adichie calls “the danger of a single story” while reading and responding to children’s narratives from all experiences, including (but not limited to) people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, LGBTQ, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities.

Books required for this class are (tentatively):
  • The Red Pencil by Andrea Pinkney
  • The Red Umbrella by Christina Diaz Gonzalez
  • Gilded by Christina Farley
  • The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
